  • Kovels on Antiques and Collectibles September 2014 ...
Cleveland, OH (PRWEB) September 01, 2014
Comic Schäfer & Vater porcelain figurals are featured in “Kovels on Antiques and Collectibles” September 2014 newsletter. More than 200 pieces—bottles, nodders, flasks, pitchers and more—were sold at the Arizona auction. See a silly blond woman nodder with a bug on her exaggerated nose that sold for $222 and a cartoonish red-headed pin holder that went for $138, as well as other figures with funny features or pithy phrases. A New York auction included more than a dozen antique and vintage advertising items urging people to buy gum. A Beeman’s Pepsin Gum tin store display promoting gum chewing as a healthy habit—good for your tummy and your teeth—sold for $127. Kovels’ September newsletter has pictures and prices of other chewing gum ads and displays from the auction. Close to 50 vintage toy racecars sold at a summer New Jersey auction. Many of today’s collectors love the toys they played with and prices had a strong finish. Examples are featured in the September issue.
Toy rings that also conjured up childhood memories were sold in an online auction. They were originally offered decades ago as cereal premiums to fans of bygone radio or TV shows. The most expensive was a Superman secret chamber ring from a 1941 “drink milk” campaign that sold for $4,592. Other character rings are also pictured. Dedham Pottery’s crackle glaze plates with blue and white border decorations of animals or flowers have been collector favorites since the first plate was designed in 1891. Dedham plates sold at a recent Massachusetts auction and are pictured with prices. And collectors interested in accent tables scored some bargains at another Massachusetts auction, where small, useful antique and vintage tables sold for very reasonable prices. Pictures, prices and descriptions of various styles are included in Kovels’ September’s newsletter.
Kim Kovel reports on her trip to the international art and design fair in Basel, Switzerland. New Uses for Old Stuff pictures a dog sculpture made from old toys. The popular illustrated Collector’s Gallery answers readers’ questions about an old washing machine, hedgehog dolls, a vintage craps table and a Rudolph Ackermann print. September’s Dictionary of Marks lists marks used by American tile manufacturers. The Buyer’s Price Guide has current prices of dozens of antiques and collectibles.

Many years ago a family inherited this Victorian marbletop table, which they had cut down to make into a contemporary coffee table.  The wood is walnut, and the marble is in excellent condition.  The finish is original.  It is now 16 inches in height.
This table dates from the 1850s, and is typical of the High Victorian style of that period.  The oval top with the ogee rim is another indication of its age, and by looking on the bottoms of the legs, one might find that it once had casters.
Unfortunately, much of the value of this piece has been lost in the cutting down of its size.  The overall market for Victorian furniture is low at the present time, but by shortening the table, the possibility of ever selling it to a purist has ceased to exist.  In its original condition today the table would be worth $350., but cut down the value drops off to $150.
In almost every such case I have encountered, the removed legs have been discarded, thus eliminating the possibility of ever returning it, even in a restored state, to its intended appearance and function.  In the 1940a and 1960s cutting down of Victorian parlor tables was in fashion, and I have seen numerous ones in their transmogrified condition.  In no case has so-doing enhanced the value.
Most likely, this table was part of a parlor suite of two end tables and a larger sofa table, this being one of the end tables.  The suite would have included a large settee, a gentleman’s chair, lady’s chair and perhaps four side chairs.
As modern entertaining no longer encompasses the concept of calling at a friend’s house on a Sunday afternoon to sit in the parlor and share a cup of tea, the market for these types of antique furnishings has evaporated.  Ironically, we find that the people most interested in acquiring them are the young, leading perhaps to the prospect of a rejuvenated market to come.

This Victorian marbletop table comes from a local family who inherited it from an uncle many years ago.  The marble is in excellent condition, and the walnut frame is has the original finish.   The piece is sturdy, and although decorative, the owners have been considering selling it, and question what price to ask.
Victorian furniture is down at the present time.  This table is a good example of its genre, but its market is more limited than it might have been 30 years ago.  It dates from 1850, and most likely is of Mid-Atlantic origin, as it is typical of the better pieces of that era when cabinetshops were putting out a vast quantity of furniture to meet the needs of the burgeoning American population.   The marble is very well cut, with a fine ogee edge to it.
The walnut frame indicates sophistication on the part of the cabinetmaker.  Having what appear to be the original casters is another good attribute.
Selling this piece in the current market is less promising than it would have been some years ago.  A reasonable asking price would be $300, but a generation ago, it could have sold more readily at a much higher figure.
As I have written many times in this space, antiques, despite our sentimentality for them, are commodities.  They follow their own market trends, rising and falling in popularity with changing societal tastes that are reflected in fluctuating in values.  This is a fine piece of furniture, and I suggest holding on to it for the foreseeable future in the hope of securing a better price down the road.
Despite the downturn in their value, Victorian pieces are popular attractions at shows and museums.  People seem to enjoy looking at them, but not using them in their homes.  A Victorian settee is not the ideal place upon which to watch the Super Bowl.

    Awesome Giclée Prints

    What is a Giclée Print?
The Definition : Giclee (zhee-klay) - The French word "giclée" is a feminine noun that means a spray or a spurt of liquid. The word may have been derived from the French verb "gicler" meaning "to squirt".
The Term : The term  "giclee print" connotes an elevation in printmaking technology. Images are generated from high resolution digital scans and printed with archival quality inks onto various substrates including canvas, fine art, and photo-base paper. The giclee printing process provides better color accuracy than other means of reproduction.

Ours are 8" x 10", Museum-quality, printed on canvas, and unframed.

All are reproductions of famous (and infamous) artwork, posters, Government Propaganda, from tourism, to roadraces, trains, antique/vintage advertisements, and old movie posters

We're only displaying a handful here, but there's over 50 to choose from, with varying prices.

This is just one element of the Antique and Vintage Ephemera we have here at 13909 Antiques.

Put us in your calander, and stop by ... 13909 Antiques is open six-days-a-week, and until 8PM on Thursday, so make your way here!
