PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH missionary bible antique bronze statue vtg seattle cowboy

Original 1/4 scale lost-wax cast bronze. Numbered 1/50 (1st of *3). Signed and dated 1950.
Subject is the State of Washington's most historic figure: frontiersman, Dr. Marcus Whitman (Oregon Trail, Whitman massacre, Whitman college).

Avard cast 3 life-size Whitman statues and 3 of these smaller 27" statues. The 3 life size statues are located at The National Statuary Hall within rotunda of The U.S. Capital Building in Washington D.C., the rotunda of The State Capital Building in Olympia, Washington and the 3rd is at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington.

This 27" bronze is arguably Washington State's most historically significant piece of Art that is still in private hands.

This statue is numbered 1/50 but authorities confirm that only *3 (27") 1/4 scale statues were ever actually cast, this being the very 1st cast. The family has confirmed that this statue was cast by Avard (not one of his descendants). The three 1/4 scale statues (cast circa. 1979) were given to persons involved in the life-size statue's placement within the rotunda of The State Capital Building in Olympia. Included is the original Press Release from THE OREGONIAN (photo w/ description on back) for the Olympia placement on October 9th 1980. Also included is the book (printed by the U.S. government) documenting the 1st life size statue's placement within the rotunda of The U.S. Capital Building in Washington D.C. in 1953. Shipping will be $34.95 to any U.S. zipcode. ($185.00 foreign)
